For several years, I took ballroom dance lessons from a local studio. Periodically, I would participate in what they call “Showcase” which involved the preparation of a choreographed routine. From pitching my creative vision for a song to acquiring costumes and props, each routine was a unique project that paid off in the end.
My first was a simple Swing to “Fun, Fun, Fun” by The Beach Boys. My second was a fun Cha Cha to “Summer in the City” by the Lovin’ Spoonful. My third was a flowing Foxtrot/West Coast routine to “Love Song” by Sarah Bareilles. These were fairly simple stories where I just worried about costumes.
Then, I started adding props or other show elements. A Viennese Waltz to “Danse Macabre” by Camille Saint-Saëns (with cardboard cemetery), A Quickstep to “Spiderman” by Michael Bublé (with imagined spider web flinging), a swing to “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins (with a quick change), and then a tango to “Shatter Me” by Lindsey Stirling
